Buying tennis balls can be one of the most expensive parts of Tennis which is otherwise quite inexpensive once you purchase your racket. Most people will buy a can of three balls from the shop at their local tennis gym. This is a convenient way to have tennis balls ready for your weekly game, but this is probably the most expensive way to purchase tennis balls and the ongoing cost can add up. For example, if you spend $10 for three balls each week for a year, this is more than $500 per year!
One solution is buying your tennis balls from a local sporting good store or even a tennis specialty store at the mall. Both of these are likely to have cheaper selection than your tennis club's store. Probably you can find the same brand you typically buy for several dollars cheaper at these stores. You can also look into cheaper brands which your tennis club store probably doesn't carry. Feel free to ask the knowledgeable sales people at these stores which of the tennis balls are of high quality. Then, buy seven or eight cans of tennis balls and keep them in your car or tennis bag in order to always have new tennis balls for your weekly game. Another option is to buy your tennis balls on line in bulk. Though you'll need to pay for shipping, buying tennis balls this way will almost certainly save you money compared to any local store.
For those on a budget, consider not buying new tennis balls each time. Though a tennis ball certainly is best when freshly opened from a pressurized can, playing with a week-old tennis ball will almost certainly be rewarding and will save you some cash.
Finally, ask around for where you can buy used tennis balls that may have been used in classes or competitions at your local tennis center. These balls will probably be in great shape and while they won't have the satisfying pop of opening a new can of pressurized new balls, they'll probably play just fine!
